The origins of UADY date back to 1918, when deputy Felipe Carrillo Puerto, driven by a desire to make university education accessible to underserved communities, proposed the creation of the Yucatecan University. Although initially blocked by the state governor, Carrillo Puerto persisted. In 1922, now as governor, he founded the National University of the Southeast, which was later renamed University of Yucatán in 1938. The institution gained autonomy and officially became UADY (Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán) in 1984. Initially composed of a few core schools (Law, Medicine, Engineering, and the Arts), UADY now offers programs in five major academic areas and serves over 26,000 students. Notably, 96.89% of its professional programs meet the highest standards of national academic quality.
